A Weekend at the Races

Yesterday capped off a great weekend of racing for KMS athletes. After having the opportunity to train at Middlebury Snow Bowl last Wednesday, the athletes were fully prepared for Saturday's slalom race. It showed, with Jonny Schwartz winning the race by four and a half seconds. Patrick, Graham, and Spencer finished finished 25th through 27th, respectively. Cade finished thirty seventh. The girls had a particularly strong showing, with four finishing in the top ten. Cassidy finished 3rd, followed by Taylor in 4th, Marina in 6th, and Ava in 9th. Finally, Killington was able to take the banner home on Saturday for the first time all year, thanks to a win over Okemo that came down to the tiebreaker.

On Sunday, we headed to Suicide 6 for another slalom. The girls showed their strength over the rest of Mid Vermont by sweeping the podium. Piper won overall by over three seconds, followed by Alli in second, Marina in third. Taylor finished 14th, Noa 24th, and Cassidy 30th. For the boys, Ian finished his first slalom race of the season, winning by almost two seconds. Jonny finished 3rd, followed by Cam (also finishing his first slalom of the season) in 6th. Patrick finished 21st and Spencer 39th. For the second day in a row, Killington took the banner in decisive fashion.

On Monday, we headed to Okemo for the first Super-G of the season. The athletes had the opportunity to navigate the course once prior to their race run, completing a training run on the course in the morning in order to prepare them for the race run in the afternoon. The athletes proved able to attack the course even at high speeds which they had not yet encountered this season. Alli won the race by two seconds, beating all but one of the boys. Ava attacked from the back, finishing third. Piper finished 5th, followed by Taylor in 6th, Cassidy 11th, and Noa 20th. The boys also had a strong showing, with Ian finishing 2nd and Jonny 3rd. Cam finished 8th, followed by Patrick in 30th, Spencer 33rd, Cade 38th, and Graham 44th. Once again, Killington brought home the banner for the third day in a row. What a great weekend! Thanks to all the parents and fans for your support this weekend. We are all so proud of the athlete's accomplishments this season!

KMS J4's GET SOME GS TRAINING IN ON NEEDLES WITH THE J3 GROUP

KMS J4's finally made there way over to needles eye for some GS training this week with the J3's. Skiing a much longer distance (25-27 meters) than usual, they found themselves very comfortable with the additional speed which is getting them ready for the Super G this weekend at Okemo.

Middlebury Training Day

Today, thanks to the staff at Middlebury Snow Bowl, we were able to hold training on Lower Allen, the venue on which this weekend's race will be held. We set from the start house all the way to the bottom, essentially simulating the exact length of the actual race course. Prior to training, the athletes had the opportunity to watch some Middlebury College Ski Team athletes train on the same venue, which proved to be very exciting and educational. We had a fun day, and the athletes will head into the weekend with a great deal of confidence. Thanks to the Snow Bowl staff and to the teachers at KMS for allowing the athletes this opportunity!

Checkin out the Dew Tour

Today, after some tough GS training on Lower Skylark, the athletes had the opportunity to see some pro athletes practice for the Dew Tour competition. Hopefully, the athletes will get to check out some live competition, as the finals happen this weekend.

Tomorrow, the Eastern Regional Series group will depart in the afternoon. Please wish Ian Clarke, Jonny Schwartz, Cam Heald, Taylor Dobyns, Ava Mattsson, Marina Rotella, Alli Price, and Piper Jenne good luck at Whiteface against the best 13 and 14 year olds in the east.

Everyone else will be diligently preparing for a critical weekend, with two Slaloms and a Super G happening in a week.

Powder Day

Although many would refer to a few inches of fresh snow as a dusting, we officially will refer to today as our first powder day at Killington. After attempting to follow through with our planned GS training on Highline, we determined that it would be too dangerous to train gates today. So, everyone was free to roam the mountain as they pleased for today's afternoon session. A few lucky skiers even made some turns down Outer Limits on its first day of being open. The skiing today was phenomenal and we are looking forward to an improved surface for training in the near future. It looks like a cold front will push its way in tomorrow!

KMS J4 Athletes With A Strong Showing In The First Slalom Of The Season

We had an awesome first race today. Some athletes really surprised themselves with some stellar results. On the boys side, Cam was 2nd, Ian 4th, Jonny 6th, Spencer 19th, Patrick 22nd, Cade 36th and Graham 52nd. On the girls side, Piper won, followed by Taylor in 5th, Marina 6th, Noa 14th, and Cassidy 18th. Thanks to all the parents who came out to cheer on the athletes! On the last day before the race season commences, we had some great timed slalom training on Bunny. The athletes got three to four runs to get them focused for Pico. Tomorrow, we head to Okemo for a GS on Wardance, the same trail that we were able to race on a little over a week ago. The team is psyched and ready to show their talent tomorrow. We look forward to seeing everyone at the race tomorrow to cheer them on!

Blustery on Bunny

Even though the pictures show what looks like a bunch of whimps that can't take the cold, the athletes, in fact, had a great day and were merely taking a quick warm-up break at the top of Bunny. The surface conditions were excellent, with a few athletes realizing the importance of tuned skis and what they can do for you on a day like today. The snow was hard, fast, and iced up quickly, which makes for a perfect training and racing surface. Luckily, the Poma was running, which allowed the athletes to get in at least 5 runs, even with the quick warm-up. Tomorrow, the athletes will take the afternoon off to catch up on sleep, tuning, and school work.

And, many thanks to the Kung Fu Master who came to give us a lesson during morning sport!

Welcome back Winter!

Finally, we had some cold temperatures today and some hard snow. The athletes got 5 productive runs on Highline. We have an exciting weekend ahead, with two races scheduled. The athletes brought some great focus to today's training, which they will need to carry into the weekend. After afternoon sport today, it looks like we will be playing some dodgeball. Should be a great time!

Time trials

Today, the athletes caught the 7am lift for the slalom time trials on Bunny Buster. After a training run, everyone took one race run and then shifted focus to GS. We then headed to Highline and took a run of GS after the younger kids finished their time trials. The athletes did a great job today and should be proud of their skiing.

Sorry about the lack of a blog post yesterday regarding the Okemo Open. Although it was a tough day for many, we had some great results. On the boys side, our best finisher was Cade Lewis in 16th. On the girls side, Ava Mattsson finished 3rd, Cassidy Bebo in 5th, and Noa Schwartz in 11th. Now, we will shift our focus to next weekends races. Thanks to all the parents who came out to support the athletes!

Early Bunny Buster

Today, we got some great training in before the rain came. After loading the lift just before 7am, we were able to see the sunrise just before the first run of training. The athletes had about five runs of solid skiing on some great snow (recently resurfaced by the Killington snow makers!) before the time trials tomorrow. Thanks to the parents for bringing the athletes to the hill so early!

Despite warm temperatures and heavy rain last night, the J3s headed out for some afternoon training on Thursday. We worked on mastering start techniques and even took some speed readings at a certain point with a radar gun to see who could gain the most speed within 50 yard of the start. The athletes raced against each other in dual format first, and then raced in teams in relay format. After an abbreviated skiing session, we headed to the gym to complete a bike, balance, and core workout. We hope everyone has a relaxing holiday break. Happy holidays!!

We had a great day of one ski drills followed by some GS on Bunny today, with perfect temperatures and sunshine. It looks like we will have to dodge some raindrops tomorrow, but we will be sure to get some quality turns in!

Highline Slalom

After a shaky first run for just about everyone, the athletes brought focus to this morning's slalom session on Highline. It was a bit warmer today, but the wind picked up on the hill. However, it did not seem to phase the athletes, skiing on a bumpy (but open, thanks to the incredible work of Killington's snowmakers!)trail. We are really beginning to see some progress in the skiing of the athletes, which is important, given they will be racing in a little over a week.

Today, we braved yet another tough weather day to ski some slalom on Bunny Buster. The snow hardened up nicely and allowed us to complete a great session with some directional transition brushes between the gates.

Workout Day

Today, we decided to keep the athletes out of the pouring rain in order to get a solid workout in. From 1 to 3pm, the athletes completed a workout that consisted of 6 different upper and lower body workouts, followed be some dual sprint races, and topped off with a solid session of core. The athletes did some great work today and are looking forward to getting back on snow tomorrow.

Today, most of the group was back together, with the Mammoth crew returning yesterday for classes. Today, we ventured up to Bunny Buster to ski a giant slalom apex drill, focusing on turn shape and pressure placement. The sun was out and the air was quite warm for mid-December. The athletes are anxious to get in gates. But they are making critical improvements in the drill courses.

Final Training Day

Today, the athletes tackled some full gate slalom after a few runs on a warm-up brush slalom. We were able to jump in the older athlete's course after they had finished. It became obvious as the day progressed that all the hard work the athletes have put in during camp has tired them out. Fatigue aside, we had another awesome day on the hill, with great snow and perfect temperatures. After making some awesome progress in Giant Slalom, the athletes now must turn their attention to slalom as we head into a critical training period for this season. Tomorrow, the J3's will be cheering on their fellow KMS athletes in a USSA J1-2-3 Slalom race. After the race, we will head back to Reno, spending the night there before we fly back to Boston on Sunday. We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday back at school!

After a nice restful morning, the J3 group ventured down to Second Chance Thrift Shop, which benefits the Foundation for Disabled Sports of the Eastern Sierra. As you can see, a few of the athletes found some rather stunning one piece ski suits, along with some retro gloves, jackets, and other assorted apparel. This afternoon, they will hit the books and rest up for the final two days of camp.

Slalom Day 1

Today, the athletes had their first taste of slalom while at Mammoth. On the Fascination trail side-by-side with the J1's and J2's, the J3's skied a slalom version of the Apex Drill with brushes in order to develop their slalom turnshape. The J1-2's were kind enough to set the track in our course, completing a warm-up run on the Apex course prior to training on their full gate course. After training, the athletes took a few free runs, some even venturing back to the very top of Mammoth to ski a much-improved Cornice trail, which now has more snow and was groomed last night. This afternoon, following study hall, the athletes will have a short session of agility work for afternoon sport. Tomorrow, we will venture down to the town of Bishop, CA during the athlete's day off.

Apex Day 2

We had another productive day today back on Andy's. The athletes worked on turnshape through an apex drill course. The weather was once again beautiful, with hero snow and temperatures in the thirties. This afternoon, after study hall, the athletes will take it easy with 15 minute swim to loosen up their legs. We had a productive early morning session today on Andy's Double Gold run. The athletes took five solid runs on an apex course, working on turn shape and pressure placement. Following the a training session from 8:30am to 11:30am, the athletes were sent to free ski with a focus. This afternoon following study hall, we will have a brief dry land session to keep their legs fresh for another day of gate training tomorrow.

Final Day of Drills

The athletes had a great final day of drills today in some warmer temperatures and sunshine. After a morning filled with focused skiing, we took a gondola ride to 'The Top of California". This afternoon, the athletes will enjoy a pool workout and maybe a quick dip into the hot tub. Check out some beautiful pictures from today. We could see Yosemite National Park as soon as we got off the gondola (at left).

Day Off

The athletes enjoyed a restful day off today, catching up on some sleep and school work. We spent the afternoon in downtown Mammoth Lakes today, eating lunch at the Pita Pit. The athletes were even able to get some Christmas shopping done. We are looking forward to another great day on the mountain tomorrow with fresh, rested legs.

Last day of First Block

Today, the athletes continued their progression focusing on finding the new foot. The weather was great, with temperatures in the twenties and only a light breeze. After skiing today, the athletes spent a few hours studying. We then brought them down into the town of Mammoth Lakes to play some wally-ball (a form of volleyball played in a squash court) at the Snowcreek Athletic Club. They had a great time and are looking forward to a rest day tomorrow, which will rejuvenate them for the next training block.

Braving the Weather

Today, the athletes showed their mental strength by skiing through some tough conditions. With the wind blowing in excess of 50 mph, and the snow falling sideways, the weather tested, but did not break, the spirit of the athletes. We continued with some one-ski progression on some tougher terrain and continued to see some great improvements. Despite the occasionally over-powering wind, we were pleased with the focus of the athletes throughout the day. They did a tremendous job.

After study hall, the athletes played a game of football, ending in a Hail Mary touchdown pass. We then escaped the cold to complete a core circuit inside. All in all, we had a great day. The attached pictures are from yesterday's hike around Convict Lake.

Mammoth Day 1

After a long day of travel, the athletes were eager to get on snow. I am told there is less snow now then there was last year at this time, but the skiing is still awesome. The athletes began by getting their feet under them during a few free runs on GS skis. We then shifted focus to one ski drills, some immediately finding their balance, others having a bit of trouble (see above). All in all, the athletes made some tremendous strides in their skiing, made evident by the final few runs of the day from mid-mountain to the bottom. We will be taking advantage of the nice weather to enjoy a short hike this afternoon. They will also be dedicating some time this evening to their studies, so do not worry teachers and parents!

With cold temperatures rolling in over night, the snowmaking crew was able to lay down some more snow all the way to the bottom of the gondola, making the descent much more bearable. The snow up top firmed up nicely, allowing the student athletes to experience some of the best snow so far this season. Great work by everyone today with some awesome focus on the hill, even with the Thanksgiving holiday looming. We wish everyone a great, safe holiday and we look forward to seeing you after a few restful days off.

The guns were blasting all day up at the mountain, and with the quick change in temperature coming early this morning, the snow surface was a bit questionable. So, we decided to spend the afternoon in the gym and on the field, after a brief meeting. A great circuit workout (pictured above) was followed by an awesome game of speedball down at the Killington Rec Center. All in all, we spent about 2.5 hours of the afternoon working out. The athletes did a tremendous job today and are looking forward to getting back on snow tomorrow.

Once again, the day started out warm and sunny. Then the Killington cloud rolled over the North Ridge area. The snow was soft and became bumpy within just a few runs, but the athletes remained focused and made some progress. We cut out a bit earlier than usual to get a workout in before lunch. Despite some incredibly warm temperatures, the J3 group managed to have an awesome day developing their skiing on the North Slope Triple. With temperatures in the 60's by the end of the morning, the snow was quite soft, but the athletes perservered and made some great improvements in their skiing.

Great first day of skiing today. Spencer and Patrick were able to get some turns in and progress on some drills on a beautiful blue bird day.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team was completing their second day of testing, specifically the bench and squat tests. The athletes did a great job, and from here, both the coaches and the athletes will be able to keep track of the athlete's progression throughout the season. We are all anxiously looking forward to our first day on snow as a group tomorrow!

Another great day of training in Saas-Fee. We have been training on hard snow and getting great results. Each day I am impressed with the focus of the J3 group, their attitude has led to high quality and large quantities of training. Peter and AnneMarie have been feeding us very well, today for lunch we had rosti mit ei, a swiss specialty that was devoured by the group.

Today was delayed due to fog, but we stayed up later and ended up with a full day.
We worked on varried turnshapes and quick movements. We got back to the hotel in time for
pasta/ pesto, salad, soup and dessert. After a break we did some pool workouts and some fun in the pool.

Not quite the same outcome as Team USA in FIFA Women's World Cup Soccer but the KMS / Saas Fee team gave it 100% in there match with our hotel mates from Val Thorens Ski Club in France.

It is great to be back in Saas Fee with our athletes. We have had a great couple of days, Lots of good snow, and plenty of drills for all. We were challenged to a soccer match by the French team from Val Thorens today, and although our team put up a good fight, we were trounced 8-0.

One more day of ramping up the volume and intensity on snow before our first day off. Check out this video from today!

WHISTLER CUP AN AMAZING EXPIERENCE FOR JOHNNY SCHWARTZ AND TEAM ISRAEL

First year Kms J3 Athlete Johnny Schwartz finished up his 1st Whistler Cup expierence with some stolid skiing but more importantly the expierence of a lifetime. The only athlete representing Israel johnny will not go home un-noticed, even getting his coach, yours truly his first international set as the Israel Ski Federation Coach. ( USA Gold and Bronze set i might add)

Johnny had a pretty amazing week, being his first races of his very young career on the big stage i felt he skied very well during the slam packed week in British Columbia Canada.

In the super G, where he drew bib # 2 the conditions couldnt have been any more perfect with the fresh snow now off the track from the girls race earlier and the visability crystal clear. After the first split which was about 1/2 way down the track he had a top 20 run in the making. Coming off the bottom flats and skiing a little too direct coming into the last pitch a small mistake down at the bottom pushed him all the way down with 53rd however he was all smiles on his return to the start and new had skied pretty well considering.

In the SL he found the wrong side of the a gate in first run and wasnt able to get a second run but redeemed himself in the GS the following day where the snow never let up for one second making it a very tricky day of racing he put down two very resprectful runs to finish up with the 38th fastest time.

Overall this was a great trip for us and he looks forward to many more expierences in future International events.

MIKA SMITH COMES HOME FROM THE WHISTLER CUP WITH AMAZING MEMORIES AND TWO GREAT RESULTS

With Mika's hip badly bruised from a sl training crash in the beginning of the week she entered the first race of the weekend with the Super G and down one very tough trail Raven-Ptarmigan which happened to be where the 2010 Olympic Games GS course was also raced. Mika still suffering that morning, she dug down as deep as it gets and found her way to the finish line with a time of 1:10:22 a very impressive run moving up 22 spots and landing her first International race with a solid 27th place. The GS which was on the same trail wasnt as nice to Mika. After having a solid first run which had her in the top 25 she came into the last pitch with a little too much heat and skied right bye the forth to last gate. The same gate a few other top skiers missed during the second run. The SL bringing the 2011 Whistler Cup Races to a end, the girls found themsleves entering the start on the Upper Dave Murray course, the same track where Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller found themselves on the podium last year during the Olympic Games. With the hip feeling much better, mika again found herself right in there after the first run moving up 21 spots and making the top 30 flip. The second run and the snow now falling heavier and visibility changing by the second and mika pulled it together again to find another solid run and landing her with a combined time of 1:32:48 and her second 27th and another top 30 place. With the US athletes finding podium in all 3 events Team USA was crowned The K2 Overall Champions, just missing the overall (without k1 attending). A SUCCESS FOR SURE....

With the Jo's over, the newly appointed j2's started racing for points the past 2 weeks and thats just what they did this weekend. With two GS's at Holimont Ski Area and 2 SL races at Holiday Valley and the boy and girls shined to say the least.

JAMES FERRI FINDS THE TOP 10 AT K2 CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN GIANT SLALOM

With the speed elements over James Ferri came back with avengence today with two solid runs and cracking the top 10 with a 7th place finish in Georgian Peaks Giant Slalom. Still not 100% satisfied it was a great effort and it should get him fired up for the last day of the K2 Canadian Championships. Tomorrow we change gears and head down the street to the Craigleif Ski Club who will be hosting the last day of competition with both ladies and mens Slalom, the banquet as well as dual slalom race under the lights.

The US squad is ready for action.

JAMES FERRI HAS A STRONG SHOWING IN THE SUPER G PORTION OF THE SUPER COMBINED AT THE K2 CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the Super Combined today at the K2 Canadian Championships James Ferri redeemed himself with a very strong 13th place in the super g portion. Unfortantly having a great sl run going he had a bobble down at the bottom of the couse and skied out and didnt get the result he was hoping for.

James along with US tamates will have the day off tomorrow but will be over at Georgian Peaks cheering on the girls squad as the start the giant slalom portion of the event.

HOFLEY SKIS TO A TOP 30 IN SUPER G AT K2 CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Carolyn Hofley finished up her speed events today at the K2 Canadian Championships with a 27th place in the super g. She skied really well and was very pleased with her run. Snow was a touch colder today and the track held up well at Osler Bluffs. Tomorrow we switch gears and the girls will be over at Georgian Peaks for Giant Slalom.

Carolyn Hofley Skis To A Top 25 In Her First Super Combined at K2 Nationals

Carolyn Hofley skiing her first ever Super Combined.

Where the athlete has one run of super g and one run of SL.

Starting 79th carolyn made the flip with the 29th fastest Super G run of the day.

Then switching gears and and putting on the SL skis she took full advantage of the smooth track (running 2nd) and laid down an impressive 15th fastest sl run and in her first international event a very impressive 22nd overall.

Coming off a Victory in the Vermont State Super G and a 4th at J3 Marriott Eastern Alpine Championships Super G, Wyatt Queirolo continued his success and took Canada by storm today at the K2 National Championships with a very impressive super g victory.

Taking advantage of an early bib # in some tuff conditions he took an early lead and he never looked back.

This was wyatt's first International Race and he started it right where he wanted too with the W.
